This presentation reviews the various pumping mechanisms of the Sputter Ion Pump (gettering, implantation, and burial of high energy neutrals) and discusses how these mechanisms are optimized in commercial Ion Pump offerings. The important contribution of StarCell technology to research in Sub-Atomic Physics (e.g., LIGO Gravitational Wave observatory) and Semiconductor metrology (e.g., Scanning Electron Microscope) applications is discussed with specific examples and success stories.
